A variable refrigerant flow system constantly adjusts the flow of refrigerant to each indoor evaporator. Therefore, each indoor evaporator has its own set of controls, allowing, for example, the air conditioning of a server room and the heating of an office space to occur simultaneously, using one HVAC system.

The indoor unit is connected to the outdoor unit through a control line. The outdoor unit meets the heating or cooling demand of the indoor unit by adjusting the compressor speed to meet the total demand.
